Homestays is a concept to promote economic tourism. Many of the local people have converted their homes into home stays. South india especially kerala has a good number of homestays. This is ideal in hill stations like the beautiful Wayanad in Malabar Kerala.Kochi (Cochin) has the most number of homestays. One can choose from luxury homestays or economy homestays.Tariff can vary with seasons. Guests can choose from homestays with families and homestays that offer bedrooms and bath. Its easy and convenient to go for shopping and sightseeing. These homestays are also very safe.If you prefer to drive there are self drive services too.Home owners can rent their cars with a charge.
A recent visit by the author has revealed gaps that need to be filled as immediately as possible. Complacency seems to have hit the operators and the single unit owners who seems to have stopped researching ways to improve their facilities and amenities on offer. For instance as local temperatures dip to the fifteens in the evenings and lower at nights none of the homestays had shower mixers in the bathrooms! It is suggested that the operators take tours to find out better systems and update themselves with state of the art amenities to improve performance that ensure returning guests.
As a friend of Wayanad and hopeful of its great potential for tourism and the huge income generating prospects for its people it is better to recall the essentials of managing a successful homestay business. A typical homestay musts are at least two good sized bedrooms with single beds that can be joined to make one queen-sized bed. Bathrooms must have European style closets with ample water, shower mixers at the shower taps. Mixers at wash basins too are an option. Providing a set of towels and essential toiletry will make the tourists' luggage lighter. You must not hesitate to advertise details such as these on your brochures, emails and websites. many offer American plan based amenities and tariffs.
The author was saddened by the sight of an ugly structure partly hiding the majestic view of the Chembra Peak in the form of a multistory hotel recently sprung up at Lakkidy right where the tourist enters the district! It is in the better interests of tourism, Wayand's economy an the local entrepreneur that one recognize shortages of accommodation and rise to act and promote homestays as the best viable and economic option for the hill station tourist. A number of upcoming homestays will be enough to discourage the multistory operators from building more!
