The unique Kabini (also spelled Kabani) river originates in the hills of Wayanad. The river is one of the 44 rivers in Kerala but this one flows East and joins the Cauvery (Kaveri) river in Karnataka. The rest of the Kerala rivers flow West and merge into the Arabian Sea.

Wayanad can be reached best by road. From Calicut in Kerala and from  Bangalore and Mysore and other towns in Karnataka. Airports nearest are Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala (airport code CCJ) and Bangalore (BLR), Mysore (MYQ) or Mangalore (IXE) in Karnataka. The nearest railroad stations are Nanjangud in Karnataka and Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala.

(Area 2132 square kilometers; Altitude above mean sea level 700 to 2100 Meters at Chembra Peak, (the highest)Classified a Hill Station by India's erstwhile rulers due to the salubrious climate you will find vast expanses of neatly trimmed  tea plantations and verdant coffee estates, crops that grow only in high altitudes with cool weather.
